MEND is a non-profit, church-based and mission-driven organization which exist to provide a community service by renting our apartments to our clients at “below-market rents” so that the apartments are “affordable” to individuals and families in need.
MEND is recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a public charity under section 509(a)(1) of the IRS code and as a tax exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code. Contributions to MEND are tax deductible under section 170 of the IRS code.
Every year MEND and the Friends of MEND must raise funds to fill the gap between the income we receive from our below-market rents and the expenses that we incur to keep the doors open and the lights on. MEND’s longevity is in large part due to the support provided by the generosity of charitable donors who have been so kind to us since 1969.
The Friends of MEND is a wholly-owned fundraising affiliate of MEND for the sole purpose of obtaining charitable contributions to support our affordable housing mission well into the future.

The low-income residents we house now and the people who are waiting for our housing to become available need MEND and your support now more than ever. The need for affordable housing in southern New Jersey continues to grow while housing development and financing grows more challenging; and the statutory, regulatory and legal environment grows more complicated. New Jersey’s continuing legal and political struggles with court-mandated affordable housing obligations (which began in 1975 with the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Mount Laurel I decision) are now in their third decade with no end in sight.
While our rents are low, our expenses are not. MEND incurs “market-rate” expenses to manage, maintain and repair our housing developments. This makes it challenging for our revenues (apartment rents) to match our expenses.
